Creating Gorgeous Concrete Flooring

When I purchased a penthouse with concrete floors, I was worried about how the space would look with all of my furniture. After moving a few things in, I realized that I was going to have to change something to make it look acceptable. Fortunately, a friend of mine recommended concrete staining and polishing as a way to create a gorgeous floor. We worked with a professional concrete contractor who was able to do the work. When he was finished staining the flooring, it looked amazing. Check out this blog for more information about the benefits of stained concrete flooring.

Vegetation Taking Over Your Concrete Driveway? How To Remove It And Stop It From Coming Back

If you have vegetation growing up through cracks in your concrete driveway, below are two different ways you can get it out. Once removed, you will need to repair the cracks so the vegetation does not move back in again. Follow the tips below and your concrete driveway will look like its old self again.

Two Types of Cracks

One common type of asphalt crack is alligator cracking, also known as fatigue cracking. This type of crack resembles the scales of an alligator. The cause of this could be the base was not properly prepared when you got your new asphalt driveway installed.

If you have standard small cracks in your drive way and your driveway is made from pervious concrete, they could be due to cold weather. This is because when water falls onto the concrete it passes directly through it. When this water freezes and thaws repeatedly, it causes the cracks to form.

Remove Vegetation

If you have a gardening hoe that has a triangle head, you can use it to remove the vegetation. Slowly stick the sharp tip down into the crack under the vegetation, and pull the hoe out towards you. Repeat this until all vegetation is gone. If you do not mind spending a little money, you can purchase a crack hoe, which is a hoe that has been developed to remove vegetation from cracks.

Another way to remove the vegetation is to burn it out. You can purchase a tool at a hardware store that shoots out a hot flame to kill the vegetation. This looks much like a torch, and generally runs on propane. This may be the best way if you have a lot of vegetation to remove. Once it is all burned up, you can easily pull it out once it cools down.

Fixing the Cracks

If you have alligator cracking, it is deeper into your asphalt. For this reason, you should hire a concrete expert to repair your driveway for you.

If you have standard cracks, purchase a crack filler at a home improvement or hardware store to fill them in. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to properly apply it.

If your driveway is in very bad condition, you may want to consider getting it replaced. A concrete company, like Pumptex Concrete Pumping, can do this much quicker and easier by using a concrete pumping machine. This may reduce costs if you are paying them by the hour.
